Paramedic (Continuing Education)

Short Term

's Paramedic (Continuing Education) program is a certificate-only, one-year cohort (includes both class and clinical components), that will prepare students to enter the workforce and provide high-quality emergency medical care to critically ill and injured patients.

Graduates of this program will be eligible to take state and/or national certification examinations at the paramedic level. Employment opportunities include providers of emergency medical services, fire departments, rescue agencies, hospital specialty areas, as well as industry, educational and government agencies.

The program prepares students to become competent entry-level Paramedics in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains without exit points at the Advanced Emergency Medical Technician and/or Emergency Medical Technician, and/or Emergency Medical Responder levels.

Prerequisites

To be eligible for enrollment in the Paramedic (Continuing Education) program, students must:

  • Attend a mandatory information session prior to registering for course.
     
  • Hold a current, valid NC EMT and/or NREMT-B certification
     
  • Hold a current, valid AHA CPR Certification
     
  • Proof of Vaccinations: Documentation must be submitted to Shield Screening for EMT initial provider students and approved to secure a permanent seat in the course (students will only have 14 days to upload their information).
    • Varicella (Chicken Pox): Two vaccinations or a positive antibody titer
    • Hepatitis B: Three vaccinations or a positive antibody titer
    • Tuberculosis (TB); Submit documentation of one of the following:
      • Two-step TB skin test or
      • Two consecutive annual TB skin tests (10-12 months between tests) or
      • A negative quantiFERON Gold blood test (lab report required). If the results are positive, submit a copy of your clear chest X-Ray with physician report.
    • Tetanus, Diphtheria, & Pertussis (Tdap): Submit documentation of a Tetanus, Diphtheria, & Pertussis (Tdap) vaccination, administered within the past 10 Years.
    • Polio: Submit documentation of your primary Polio vaccination series (at least 3 vaccinations), or a positive Polio titer listing Polio I, Polio II, and Polio III (lab report required)
    • Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR): Proof of two vaccines or a positive antibody titer
    • Influenza: Submit documentation of a flu vaccination administered during the current flu season (September - March)
    • COVID vaccine and at least 1 booster
       
  • Take Anatomy & Physiology prior to registering for the course
    1. BIO 168 & 169 (only 168 must be completed before the start of class)
    2. BIO 163 + MAT 110
    3. EMS 3163A A&P for Paramedics
    4. Other previously taken Anatomy & Physiology will be assessed on a case-by-case basis
       
  • Must show proof of college-level math and reading:
    1. Proof of post-secondary degree (AS, BS, BA, MS….) OR
    2. Submit proof of High School Diploma or GED – PLUS one of the following:
      1. NCDAP, ACT, SAT, HiSET, ACCUPLACER, COMPASS, or ASSET scores from the last 12 months that show proof of acceptable scores for Math and English
      2. College transcript showing successful completion of a college-level English (ENG 111) or higher and completion of a college level Math
      3. Demonstrate mastery on RISE English placement Tier 2 OR successfully complete ENG-002 through Tier 2 (grade of P2) AND RISE Math placement Tier 1
         
  • Must be able to satisfy our Technical Standards

Note: Per COAEMSP: Positive placement means that the graduate is employed full or part-time in the profession or in a related field; or continuing his/her education; or serving in the military. A related field is one in which the individual is using cognitive, psychomotor, and affective competencies acquired in the educational program.

Students obtaining a state and/or national paramedic certification can apply 47 to 49 credit hours toward the Emergency Medical Science AAS degree program in the future. Policy on Advanced Placement, Transfer Credit, & Experiential Learning

Âé¶¹Ó°ÊÓ’s EMS Educational Program does not accept Advanced Placement or Transfer credit for any of our core paramedic classes.

Students obtaining a state and/or national paramedic certification can apply 47 to 49 credit hours toward the Emergency Medical Science AAS degree program in the future. EMS-4400Q Paramedic I

This Emergency Medical Services (EMS) credential-related course must adhere to the most current guidelines established by the NC Office of EMS (NCOEMS) as applicable to the initial Paramedic course. This includes: OEMS Education Institution approval, program director, instructor standards, course content, clinical/field requirements, and skill documentation. Paramedic I is the first of three required courses that must be completed successfully for the student to be eligible for the NCOEMS & National Registry of Emergency Medical Technician (NREMT) exam. Paramedic I will cover the following topics: Advanced Airway, Cardiology I, Pharmacology, EMS Clinical Practicum I & II, Cardiology II, Trauma, & Patient's with Special Challenges. All paramedic courses comply with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Standards (NHSTA) EMS Education Standards.

EMS-4400R Paramedic II

This Emergency Medical Services (EMS) credential-related course must adhere to the most current guidelines established by the NC Office of EMS (NCOEMS) as applicable to the initial Paramedic course. This includes: OEMS Education Institution approval, program director, instructor standards, course content, clinical/field requirements, and skill documentation. Paramedic II is the second of three required courses that must be completed successfully for the student to be eligible for the NCOEMS & National Registry of Emergency Medical Technician (NREMT) exam. Paramedic II content includes: Medical Emergencies, Life Span, Clinical Practicum III, and Capstone. Successful completion of Paramedic I is required to enroll in Paramedic II. All paramedic courses comply with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Standards (NHSTA) EMS Education Standards.

EMS-4400S Paramedic III

This Emergency Medical Services (EMS) credential-related course must adhere to the most current guidelines established by the NC Office of EMS (NCOEMS) as applicable to the initial Paramedic course. This includes: OEMS Education Institution approval, program director, instructor standards, course content, clinical/field requirements, and skill documentation. Paramedic III is the third of three required courses that must be completed successfully for the student to be eligible for the NCOEMS & National Registry of Emergency Medical Technician (NREMT) exam. Eligibility for the exam includes successful completion of the Medical Director oral boards. Paramedic III provides the "field internship" component of the requirements in meeting the field hours, patient contacts, and skill utilization to successfully meet CoAEMSP/NCOEMS accreditation needs. Only students successfully completing Paramedic I and II are eligible to enroll in Paramedic III. No re-entry availability. All paramedic courses comply with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Standards (NHSTA) EMS Education Standards.
